Brickworkz LEGO mosaics : Blog : Brickworld 2007, Day 2 Brickworld 2007, Day 2Day 2 of Brickfest was my first full day in Chicagoland. This morning began with a wake-up call at 6:30am. I got my vendor area all set up in the ballroom (looks something like this: (click for larger version) When everything was set up, I got the dual monitors going, displaying photos and YouTube videos of the LEGO mosaics in progress. They drew some attention from the AFOLs, and I got to meet some of them that I hadn't met last year. The first "Intro to Mosaics" session I hosted was very informal. I wasn't fully set up as they gathered around my area. So, I fielded questions, explaining the methods of mosaic building. This is one of those situations where free advice surprisingly does not mean you lose your stance among your market. Contrary to popular belief, if someone takes the time to explain all the technical and subtle nuances of brain surgery to you, you just gained a new appreciation and respect for the surgeon, and despite your new knowledge, you still want THAT GUY to do the operation. Why? We may never know. But education is never a wasted thing. It's strange, but give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he still wants you to fish for him tomorrow. Hey, I'm not complaining. It's paying the bills! :-) In talking to folks about my current projects, it got me thinking about how lucky I am to have some really stellar clients. This week, Brickworkz LLC is 18 months old. And today I began my 21st mosaic. My customers have sought out unique creativity and to this day I have not heard a single bit of feedback that wasn't overwhelmingly positive. That's a testament to the focus on quality and not cutting corners with Brickworkz. While I hung out at my vendor table, I began working on a new mosaic for Jeff and Olivia. They liked the old one, but knowing what I know now, there were so many things I wanted to change. They probably just humored me to get me to stop looking at it with the incessant desire to change it, but either way, I got the old one back and am working on a nicer, much better-quality LEGO mosaic for them both. The day flew by. I snuck out early after hearing the keynote from LEGO's head of community speak. He seems very genuinely interested in the AFOLs, so he's okay in my book! :-) I left early to fight rush-hour and go to the LEGO store to dip into some kick-ass savings the Brickworld event created. With 25% off everything in the store, I figure I saved around $440 today. It was a good day for Brickworkz. ;-) I'm back in my hotel room now, settling in for the night and getting ready for a full day tomorrow- public day. I'm really looking forward to making people smile. ...hell, I'm smiling already. Play well, Posted by Brian Korte on June 22, 2007 What do you think?
